      1. nocturnal marsupials wide-ranging across the midwestern United States whose proclivity to overeat leads them to fall asleep and lose grip of their tree. As possums are highly social, whole passels may succumb to this phenomenon, known as "raining possums", especially in the summer when insects and grubs are plentiful. Rarely causes a problem, although a large, bull possum can be quite startling to an unsuspecting hiker if they land on or close to them.

         Interestingly, some Native Americans considered it unusually lucky to have such an encounter and often went out at night in couples seeking the experience. Closely related to the Australian Drop Bear, they are easily distinguished by the fact that North American Falling Possums descend inadvertently, whereas for the Australian Drop Bear, it is their preferred way of hunting.
